In Defense of Animals (IDA), located in San Rafael, California, is an international animal protection organization dedicated to ending the abuse and exploitation of animals by protecting their rights, welfare and habitats and by raising their status beyond that of mere property, commodities and things. Through their chimpanzee sanctuary in Cameroon, Africa, their veterinary clinics in Mumbai, India, and their 64-acre sanctuary for abused and abandoned animals in rural Mississippi, their work on behalf of animals spans the globe. Kenza & Baati
Kenza and Baati were both nursing infants when poachers killed their mothers to supply the illegal ape meat trade. Kenza was sold as a pet and Baati was kept in a small wooden box, deprived of physical contact and comfort. Having been rescued by IDA-Africa Kenza, now 3 years old, and Baati, 5 years old, are good friends in the protected 5-acre forested nursery of Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center.


Kiki
Emaciated and barely alive, Kiki was rescued by IDA-Africa from a small, dark concrete cell where he had survived for at least 15 years. Now Kiki's sweet and gentle disposition makes him a wonderful leader of his adoptive chimpanzee family at the Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center.


Massamba
Massamba was orphaned by a hunter and then confiscated by the military in the country of Angola. In 2003, IDA-Africa transported him to the Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center where he lives in an enclosed tract of forest with seven other chimpanzees; including his blind adult male friend Chouki.


Milou
IDA-Africa's newest resident Milou was orphaned at 5 months by a poacher who killed his mother to supply the illegal ape meat trade. Now under the loving care of Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center staff , Milou is gaining weight, drinking baby milk formula, teething and gingerly learning to walk.


Tic
In early 2006, IDA-Africa rescued Tic from an urban parking lot where he was on display in human baby clothes. At Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center he lives and plays in a natural forest habitat with 11 other chimpanzees.
