Is It OK to Send One Thank You to a Group?

Dear Ms. Cards Etiquette,
At my baby shower, 3 of my friends from work pooled their money for one large gift. How do I send the thank you card? Do I send each one card or send one thank you to all three people?

Script Thank You Card

Congratulations, Mama!

Actually, you could do both: send one card to the three of your friends, or send them each a thank you. Both ways are acceptable, however, it is more formal to send each person their own thank you.

It isn’t very often when it is appropriate to send one thank you to many people, but there are certainly times when it just makes more sense.

The general rule is this: if the group of people is more than five, or if you are able to send the thank you to the same address, and everyone will get it, then it is ok to send one thank you to a group.

Let’s say all the folks at work got together for a baby gift – and that is entirely possible with the cost of baby items these days. You know you can send a thank you to work and everyone will see it, so that is a time when it is ok to send one thank you to many people.

Really, in your case, Mama, I’d probably send one thank you to all three people, but it is entirely up to you.

And, since you have a baby on the way, you’ll save money by buying Thank You Cards in bulk! ;)
