3 Ideas for a No-Fail New Years Mailing

Tags: ,

Dear Ms. Cards Etiquette

We’re just getting ready to send out Christmas cards, and we’re getting ready to plan our company promotions for next year. Do you think we should send New Years cards too? Or is that too soon after Christmas to bother everyone?

Samantha

If you handle your mailings right, Samantha, sending cards is never a “bother” to anyone! Your Christmas cards should just be a “thank you” to everyone for supporting your business during the previous year … your New Years cards can be your first opportunity to really promote your business for the coming year. While a New Years mailing is an especially good idea for companies who’ve skipped sending holiday cards, they’re really a good idea for everyone.

Here’s a few ideas for New Years cards, if you’re sending them after your regular Christmas mailing:

  1. Include a coupon or gift certificate in your New Years cards. A lot of businesses feel a big lull right after the holiday season. Giving your customers a really good deal at the start of the New Year can help revitalize your bottom line. But be generous … if you print coupons, make sure they don’t expire until February or March, so it doesn’t come across as a pushy “BUY NOW” promotion.
  2. Have a contest for the New Year. Whether it’s a random drawing, a trivia contest (where the winner is drawn from correct entries), or something else … give away some merchandise or service credit, and include an entry form for the contest in your New Years cards. Have the entrants come in to your store or office to turn in the entry forms.
  3. Send out invitations to a late New Years party. Offer refreshments and light snacks, and invite everyone to your business for a get together. This can be an especially good idea for businesses introducing a new product line for the New Year. Having a sale during the party is also a great incentive.

A great way to keep your business remembered all year is to send a calendar card as your New Years mailing. You can put your business name, logo and contact information so it’ll be handy for your customers to use throughout the year.
