No TagsThere is an idea that the people who lived in the second half of the 19th century, during the reign of Queen Victoria, were somber and very proper. That may be partly true, but they also loved light and bright colors. Anyone who has looked at Victorian houses with all their bright paint and fancy wood gingerbread trim knows that the people of that time loved “over-the-top” decoration. 
They did not stop at the outside of their houses either. Everything they lived with was embellished. Clothing was adorned with braids, buttons and ribbons. The insides of their homes were decorated with hand-printed or painted wallpapers and ornate furniture. Tables were skirted to the floor and covered with things like seashells, bird nests and family pictures.
Christmas provided a chance to dress up the house even more. Garlands of greenery covered mantles and stair rails. Candles gave the decorations and the beautiful Christmas tree a soft golden glow.
Christmas cards were no different. A printed image was decorated with lace, shells, dried flowers, tinsel, embroidery and ribbons. They were dusted with powdered glass or aluminum for a glittery shimmer. Some of cards showed animals dressed up in clothes and doing human activities.
