Mystery of The Magi

Christmas pageants always include these richly robed and crowned men who traveled far to worship the newborn King. Conflicting traditions surrounding the Magi, or Wise Men, abound, and at least three locations claim to be the burial place of all of them. What is the real story behind all the tales we have heard?
The historical account in the Bible tells us that the Magi came from the east. Most likely they were highly educated priests from Persia, who had studied the Jewish prophesies about the promised Messiah. They presented the Christ Child with three costly gifts. This is why we have assumed that they were three kings, but this information is not recorded. The gifts they gave to Jesus represented: gold for a king, myrrh for burial, and incense for worship.
We do not know how they traveled. It may have been by camel caravan or some other form of transportation common to that time. They followed a star or astrological sign in the sky. Their studies had shown them that the birth of this Child was a tremendously important event in the history of mankind. It was worth the sacrifice required to make this long and difficult journey.
