A Golfer’s Christmas
No TagsOne of the best of the best golfers passed away this year. Byron Nelson will be remembered and honored for a long time. In an interview with Associated Press, he once said, “I know a little bit about golf. I know how to make a stew and I know how to be a decent man.” Well, he certainly knew a lot about golf and he was a remarkable man.
In 1945, when he was 34 years old, Nelson won 18 tournaments and retired from full time tour play. He bought a 630 acre ranch in Roanoke, Texas with his earnings.
Woodworking was a hobby he thoroughly enjoyed to the end of his life. Every Christmas he presented his family and friends with handmade gifts he had made in the woodshop behind his house on the ranch. It is obvious that part of the reason Byron Nelson enjoyed Christmas so much was that he knew how to give to others. Tim Finchem, PGA Tour commissioner said at Nelson’s funeral, “He lit up a room. He was always trying to make people around him feel good.”
