Most Christmas traditions such as Santa Claus, Christmas trees, Family gatherings and gift giving were well established in the eastern United States long before the pioneers began settling in the west. These courageous individuals left the comfort of a familiar life for the adventure and independence of the frontier. Their new homes were most often isolated and living conditions were harsh. These strong men and women were not able to bring many material goods with them, but they brought their love for faith and family and tradition with them to the western wilderness.
Most early settlers didn’t have much cash, or places to spend it. They had to be resourceful. Decorations and gifts were usually homemade. Sugar was carefully hoarded for holiday baking and a clump of sagebrush sometimes stood in for the Christmas tree. Holiday celebrations gradually became more like those in the east, but many descendants of these sturdy pioneers and ranchers have not forgotten the joys and hardships experienced by their ancestors.
